It means we teach them to be responsible around it. A child might chop a thumb off with an ax in the yard chopping wood. That does not mean we confiscate the axes. A child might drill through his/her hand using a power drill that is in the "off-limits" work shop. But we do not take drills away. A child could get a deadly shock sticking something in an electrical outlet, but we do not shut off electricity to the house.
All kinds of accidents, some dangerous and deadly, can happen to our children with just about anything we use. We do not remove them altogether from society, but we make sure our children learn how to use them responsibly. It's called responsible parenting.
The same goes for guns. Period.
